I guess for most of LA County, today is the first day of school. As a child, I don’t recall ever really hating going back to school.
I grew up on the East Coast, where we actually had seasons. There’s a part in the movie, You’ve Got Mail where Meg Ryan’s character waxes on about the beauty of Fall, and a line about a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils. I think I kind of felt that way. Well, maybe until I got into High School.
There was something about the ritual of going shopping for new clothes and school supplies (Trapper Keeper, anyone?) About the first time you had to wear a sweater or a jacket. About the anticipation of seeing friends you haven’t seen all summer. And telling stories about your vacation to the beach. Even back then, I was a beach girl!
One ritual we had was a neighborhood water battle on back to school eve. Someone’s father would be “washing the car.” The hose would stray and someone would “accidentally” get wet. Then buckets of water balloons would mysteriously appear. Eventually, all of us kids would end up being thrown into our pool, clothes and all.
So, whether you are going back, or sending your kids back, whatever your ritual is, enjoy it and make it a good year…
