Bike Share!

I kinda’ dropped the ball, guys (it’s that almost-deadly illness that has had me laid up,) but I still feel the need to fill you in on something that happened yesterday ‘coz it’s a good one. Long Beach Bike Share has arrived! OK, maybe I don’t feel too badly, because the official launch isn’t until next weekend at Beach Streets (more about that later.) But yesterday, the program was unveiled with two bike stations downtown.

Wait, what? You don’t know what any of this means? Bike sharing is a network of bike “stations” where you may rent a bike for a short period of time. You can pay by the minute, or they have daily and monthly plans. You pick up the bike at a nearby station, and drop it off at your final destination at another station (or even at a public bike rack.) Use it on your commute in conjunction with the Blue Line. Rent one instead of driving or taking a taxi. Or, just go for a joyride, if you don’t have a bike.

Bicycling is a great way to get around in an urban area (we’re lucky it’s pretty flat around town.) It’s healthy and economical. Oh. And it’s FUN! I love my bike! Don’t worry. There will be a station or two coming to the BS area. By the time the program has been fully implemented, it plans to have at least 50 stations and 500 bikes. So, next time you’re out and about, keep your eyes open for these blue bikes and their stations. You have no idea how much you have been wanting this…

  1. Nice! We are eagerly awaiting a bike share program here in Dallas – there are two prototype stations out there – too few to be useful, of course. Our sister-city, Fort Worth, has a vibrant bike-share program going. You can take the train into downtown Fort Worth and spend a great day riding from kiosk to kiosk, enjoying the sights, beer, and food. It’s a great thing. Only wish they would level out a few of the hills.

    Thanks for sharing.
